Student Loan Delay Warning Issued for Those Who Miss Tomorrow’s Deadline

Thousands of students across the UK are being urged to submit their student finance applications immediately or risk delays in receiving their funding before the start of the academic year. The Student Loans Company (SLC) has issued a warning that those who fail to apply by the priority deadline of Friday, May 17, may not get their maintenance loans in time for the start of the autumn term.

The deadline applies to both new full-time undergraduate students and returning students who plan to apply for Tuition Fee Loans and Maintenance Loans for the 2024/25 academic year.

Urgent Call to Action

In a statement, the SLC said it has already received over 1.1 million applications for student finance for the upcoming academic year but is still waiting for many more. Students who miss the May 17 deadline can still apply, but they are being warned that their funding may not arrive in time for the beginning of term if their application is delayed.

“Applying before the deadline means we can make sure students have their money in place for the start of term,” said Chris Larmer, Executive Director for Operations at the SLC. “There’s no need to wait for a confirmed place at university or college – applications can be submitted now and updated later if needed.”

The message is clear: students should submit their application now, even if they’re still deciding where to study.

Who Needs to Apply

The deadline applies to:

  • New full-time undergraduate students in England
  • Continuing students who received loans in previous years and are returning for further study

The application process applies to loans that cover:

  • Tuition fees (paid directly to universities and colleges)
  • Maintenance loans (paid directly to students to help with living costs)

How to Apply

Applications should be submitted online via the official government portal at gov.uk. Students will need to create or log into a Student Finance account and complete the application form. Supporting documents, such as household income details, may also be required – especially for those applying for means-tested maintenance loans.

Applicants can still make changes to their course or university details later if their plans change after results day.

Consequences of Missing the Deadline

While the application window remains open beyond May 17, missing the priority deadline increases the risk of late payments.

This could mean:

  • Delays in receiving maintenance loans
  • Struggling to pay rent or cover living costs at the start of term
  • Additional stress during a critical period of transition for students

The SLC says it works hard to process late applications as quickly as possible, but with high demand, delays are likely for those who apply after the priority date.

Advice for Students

Chris Larmer from the SLC encouraged students not to delay.

“Our message is simple – apply now, don’t wait. It’s the best way to make sure your money is ready for when you start your studies. We’re also urging students to keep an eye on their online account and respond to any requests for information quickly.”

Students are also reminded to:

  • Double-check bank account details are correct
  • Provide any requested information promptly
  • Monitor their application status online

Detailed guidance and application walkthroughs are available on the official Student Finance section of the UK government’s website.

Support for Parents and Guardians

If students are applying for maintenance loans based on household income, parents or guardians will need to submit their financial details online. The process is secure and separate from the student’s own application.

Information for parents is also provided on the government’s website to assist with supporting a child’s student finance application.

What About Students in Other UK Nations

The May 17 deadline applies to students in England. Students in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland must apply through their respective funding bodies, each of which has its own deadlines and application systems.

These include:

  • Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS)
  • Student Finance Wales
  • Student Finance Northern Ireland

Students are advised to check directly with their regional funding authority to ensure they meet the relevant deadlines.

Final Reminder

The clock is ticking for students who have not yet applied for their loans. While missing the May 17 deadline does not mean a student is ineligible for support, it does mean there is no guarantee the money will arrive by the time term begins in September.

With rising living costs, accommodation expenses, and the challenges of university life, having financial support in place is more important than ever.

Students are strongly advised to apply today to ensure they receive the funding they need on time.
